Skin Tumors

Diagnosis and treatment of benign and malignant skin tumors

Skin tumors are the most common neoplasms worldwide. The most common benign skin tumors are: atheroma, lipoma, xanthelasma, hemangioma, and pigment nevi. Although benign tumors generally pose no health risks, they can be very debilitating.

Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma are among the most common malignant skin tumors. Less common, but with an equally rapidly increasing incidence, is malignant melanoma. Timely detection and removal of these skin tumors generally guarantees a good chance of recovery. The smaller the tumor at diagnosis, the smaller the required surgery and the less noticeable the resulting scar. Larger tissue defects require reconstruction with local flaps or skin grafts.

Skin Tumors

1Benign Skin Tumors

Benign skin tumors can be removed for both aesthetic and functional reasons. The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia and is usually quick and straightforward.

Common benign skin tumors include:

  • Atheroma (sebaceous cyst)
  • Lipoma (fatty tissue tumor)
  • Xanthelasma (yellowish cholesterol deposits)
  • Hemangioma (blood vessel tumor)
  • Pigment nevi (moles)

2Malignant Skin Tumors

Early detection and treatment of malignant skin tumors is crucial. If you notice any changes in existing moles or the appearance of new, unusual skin growths, it is important to seek medical advice promptly.

Common malignant skin tumors include:

  • Basal cell carcinoma
  • Squamous cell carcinoma
  • Malignant melanoma

3Treatment Approach

The treatment of skin tumors depends on their type, size, and location. Small benign tumors can often be removed in a simple outpatient procedure under local anesthesia.

For malignant tumors, a wider excision may be necessary to ensure complete removal of all cancerous cells. In some cases, reconstruction with local flaps or skin grafts may be required to achieve the best aesthetic and functional outcome.

Consultation

During your consultation, we will carefully examine any concerning skin lesions and discuss the most appropriate treatment options for your specific case. Early intervention is key to achieving the best possible outcome.
