An enlargement of the mammary gland in men is referred to as gynecomastia. A distinction must be made between "true gynecomastia" and "false" gynecomastia.
True gynecomastia is caused by side effects of medication, diseases of internal organs, or hormone-producing tumors. In rare cases, gynecomastia is caused by a malignant tumor of the male breast tissue.
False gynecomastia often occurs in people who are overweight and is caused by excessive fat deposits. Gynecomastia is frequently a combination of an overly large mammary gland and excess fatty tissue.
Psychological Impact
In any case, an enlarged male breast can be a burden. Those affected often find it embarrassing and can seriously affect self-confidence.
1Treatment Options
Good results have been achieved with liposuction. This procedure removes excess fatty tissue and simultaneously shapes a masculine, muscular chest. Only two small, approximately 5 mm, punctures remain in the area of the areola.
If this method is not sufficient, the overly large gland is removed. Even after significant weight loss, significant excess skin may remain in the breast area and the nipple may sag. This can be corrected with a nipple lift and removal of the excess skin.
Recovery Process
The operation is performed either as an outpatient procedure or with an overnight stay in the hospital. Depending on the extent of the procedure, it is performed under twilight sleep or general anesthesia.
A compression garment must be worn for six weeks after the procedure. Patients should rest for about five days, after which they can resume light physical activity (strength training and running only after about six weeks).
2Personal Consultation
During an individual consultation, I will present the surgical methods that are most suitable for you, taking your wishes and expectations into account. During the initial consultation, I will also discuss the possibility of reimbursement of the surgical costs through your health insurance.
Treatment Costs
If your insurance does not cover the costs, I can provide a cost estimate upon request, giving you an overview of the financial scope of the treatment costs (doctor's fees and applicable hospital fees).
Patient Satisfaction
My patients are highly satisfied with the treatment of gynecomastia. They often report a completely new outlook on life.
