Age spots and sun spots are benign skin blemishes that appear in certain areas of the body over time. In medicine, these unsightly skin changes are also known as "lentigo senilis" and "lentigo solaris." Today, these unsightly pigmented spots can be removed with a single laser treatment. Laser therapy is a particularly effective way to erase the dark marks of aging.
Laser removal of bothersome pigment spots generally requires no special preparation. However, the patient can help optimize the results by avoiding strong sun exposure for up to 10 weeks prior to treatment. The treatment is relatively painless, similar to needle pricks. Local anesthesia is not necessary. For large pigment lesions, an anesthetic cream is applied locally.
Before laser treatment, the affected skin areas should be thoroughly cleansed and freed of any cosmetic residue. After treatment, there are usually no adverse effects.
It is advisable to cool the treated skin areas. Sunblock should be applied for up to 10 weeks, and intensive sunbathing and visits to a tanning bed should be avoided.
The duration of treatment depends on the size of the treatment area. Individual spots may disappear in as little as five minutes. Spot-free skin is usually achieved after the first session. However, if follow-up treatments are necessary, they should be performed at eight-week intervals.
Age spots can be faded with a laser without leaving scars. The brown spots soon disappear, revealing a fresh, pinkish complexion. This fresh, rosy skin tone will blend in with the surrounding skin tone within approximately 8-10 weeks.
